How to calculate cubic feet
To calculate the cubic feet volume of a space, measure the length, width and height of the space in feet. Once you have all three figures, multiply them together: length × width × height = cubic feet
To work out the volume in cubic feet:
If your measurements are in inches or other units, you need to convert to feet before doing this calculation. Some easy to remember conversions are: 12 inches = 1 foot, approx. 30.48 cm = 1 foot, 0.3048 m = 1 foot, and 1 yard = 3 feet.
For example, if you want to calculate the volume of a box that is 5 feet long, 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall, you'd need to do the multiplication. It would be: 5 × 4 × 3 = 60 cubic feet (ft³). The answer is exactly 60 cubic feet.
If your measurements were already in another unit, the below sections walk you through how to convert before computing.
Calculating irregular shapes
The shape I've shown above represents a simple rectangular solid, sometimes called a rectangular prism or a "cuboid." If, instead, you need to calculate the volume of an irregular shape or round container, the calculation of volume changes:
- Cylinder: π × r² × height
- Sphere: (4/3) × π × r³
- Cone: (1/3) × π × r² × height
- Triangular Prism: (1/2) × base × height × length
For complex shapes, you might need to break them down into simpler geometric components and calculate each separately before adding them together.

Converting from units other than feet
Cubic feet is a very common measurement unit in the United States, used in everything from a house (ceiling to rooms) to area of a box. It's also used in shipping costs to determine the volume of the items to ship.
If all your measurements are already in feet, then you simply multiply the three numbers together as the formula shows. But when you need to convert from other measurements, these are the key considerations:
- If you are measuring in inches, convert to feet by dividing by 12. Then do the cubic calculation using feet.
- If you are measuring in centimeters, divide each by 30.48 to get feet. Then proceed as usual with the cubic calculation.
- If measuring in meters, multiply each measurement by 3.2808 to convert to feet. Then calculate normally.
- If measuring in yards, multiply each measurement by 3 to convert to feet. Then calculate cubic feet.
Calculating cubic feet from inches
- Measure your length, width and height in inches (in).
- Divide the result by 1728 to convert cubic inches to cubic feet.
Inches to cubic feet example
Let's say that you have a box that is 24 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 12 inches tall.
24 × 18 × 12 = 5,184 cubic inches
5,184 ÷ 1,728 = 3 cubic feet
You can also convert each measurement to feet first: 24/12 = 2 feet, 18/12 = 1.5 feet, 12/12 = 1 foot. Then: 2 × 1.5 × 1 = 3 cubic feet.
Calculating cubic feet from meters
- Measure your length, width and height in meters.
- Multiply the result by 35.3147 to convert cubic meters to cubic feet.
Calculating cubic feet from yards
- Measure your length, width and height in yards.
- Multiply the result by 27 to convert cubic yards to cubic feet.
How to convert from cubic inches to cubic feet
A cubic foot is made up of 1,728 cubic inches. To convert from cubic inches to cubic feet, simply divide the cubic inches figure by 1,728. The formula can be expressed as:
Cubic feet = cubic inches ÷ 1,728
Example 1
Amanda has a fish tank and she knows that the total volume is 3,456 cubic inches. She wants to know the volume in cubic feet.
Formula: V = 3,456 ÷ 1,728
V = 2 ft³
Her fish tank has a volume of 2 cubic feet.
Example 2
We have a box with a width of 30 inches, a length of 24 inches, and a height of 18 inches. Calculate the volume in cubic feet.
30 × 24 × 18 = 12,960 cubic inches
12,960 ÷ 1,728 = 7.5 ft³
In other, your converted calculation for 7.5 ft³ gives the volume in cubic feet as 7.5 ft³.
