A gallon of litre: the key differences
A US liquid gallon (the "common" gallon) is equivalent to 3.785 liters. A UK (imperial) gallon is equivalent to 4.546 liters. The difference in sizes has historical roots β the US gallon was based on the old English wine gallon, whilst the UK imperial gallon was defined in 1824 as 10 pounds of water at a specific temperature.
It's worth noting that the US dry gallon (used for grains and other dry goods) is slightly different again at 4.405 liters, though this measurement is seldom used in daily life.
- 1 US (liquid) gallon = 3.78541 liters
- 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 liters
- 1 US dry gallon = 4.405 liters

The following table shows pints per liter and pints per US and UK gallon:
| Unit | US Pints | UK Pints |

| 1 US Gallon | 8 | 6.661 |
| 1 UK Gallon | 9.608 | 8 |
Understanding liter and gallon sizes
A useful rule of thumb: a US gallon is roughly the same volume as 3.8 one-liter bottles of water. A UK imperial gallon is closer to 4.5 one-liter bottles. This can help you quickly visualize the difference.
Another helpful comparison: a US gallon is about 83% the volume of a UK imperial gallon. So if you're used to buying fuel in the UK and move to the US, you'll notice that a "gallon" at the US pump is noticeably smaller than what you'd expect. This partly explains why US fuel prices per gallon appear cheaper than UK prices, aside from different tax structures.
